The Scented Life: All about fragrance

A friendly note to L’Oreal’s haircare division

by Amy on September 9th, 2007

vive.JPGI think it might be worth a shot to write an open letter to L’Oreal, with a bit of friendly advice, so here goes. I purchased a bottle of their reformulated Vive Pro conditioner. It’s for “unmanageable hair” which is definitely what I have going on. The formula is great - I use a pretty good amount, leave it on for five minutes, and comb my hair then let it air dry. With just a little bit of styling creme, my hair looks passable.  That’s really all I’m aiming for these days.

With such a decent formula, I still find myself loath to reach for this bottle over others in my shower (notably, Rusk Sensories conditioner).  I realized pretty early on that it’s due to the HEAVY, floral/synthetic fragrance.  So, L’Oreal - if you want to sell more of what I feel is an otherwise great product, you can start by revamping the fragrance.  Something lighter,  for starters,  with a more natural fragrance. Regis’ Olive Oil line and the aforementioned Rusk Sensories are a good place to start.  Matrix Biolage line is also one I love for the scent.

How about you?  Have you ever tried a product that works fine, but you just can’t use because of the scent?  I’m sure there are other examples of poor scent choice by many other brands, but this one comes to mind first because I face the dilemma everyday.

    Mmm, YES!

I have a LUSH “Retread” conditioner and can’t stand the smell. I may add some essential oil to it, OR (this from an email passed on by my husband from a male colleague. who knew they give good tips?) use it on my legs before I shave them!

I do use conditioner as shaving creme, it works well. It’s a good way to use up extra conditioner but if it’s smelly, it still stinks to use. The fragrance of my L’Oreal conditioner is so strong I don’t think you could make it any better.
