Fragrance in Skincare
Skincare, especially facial skincare lines, often has a signature fragrance. I’m thinking specifically of Estee Lauder and brands of that ilk. But really, fragrance or scent in skincare, even if it’s from natural sources like essential oils, can be a big problem. Sometimes, a product might work very well on the skin but the fragrance is just not something you enjoy. What a bummer! I understand that fragrance in skincare is also used to cover up the scent of the active and carrier ingredients. Personally, I’m not usually turned off by fragranced skincare but I’d prefer to have it be as light as possible. One brand that I particularly find to have strange scents is Biore. I love their products - the scrub in particular is just wonderful, but it has a weird smell that reminds me of watermelon. Clinique has a similar product that has a menthol fragrance (a common fragrance additive in skincare to give a cooling sensation) but menthol is actually a skin irritant (according to Paula Begoun, anyway). Several lines do have hypo-allergenic, fragrance free focused products, and if perfume is a problem, I’d definitely stick close to these brands. Almay and Neutrogena are two low priced options that come to mind .
I recently went shopping with a friend on her virgin voyage through Sephora, and she purchased the SPF 15 FaceMoisturizer (she wants to prevent premature aging due to sun exposure, and this is a great first step). Just today she said this product has really done wonders for her skin, and she really enjoys the fragrance! This particular formula has fragrance in the middle of the ingredients list, which seems like it might be strong to me.
What brands of facial skincare have fragrances you love? Any repeat offenders that are too highly perfumed?
