The Scented Life: All about fragrance

Speaking of nails - scented products for hands and manicures!

by Amy on September 15th, 2007

I’m an on-again, off-again nail biter.  It seems the only way I can really succesfully stop biting is to become obsessed with not biting (i.e., polishing, manicuring, etc) my nails.    There are several brands/products that have wonderful scents to boot,  so I thought I’d share them.

solar.jpgOne of the simplest things you can do to get great results is use Creative’s Solar Oil.  It has a lot of different natural oils (rice bran, almond, etc) and smells like almond.  If your nails are weak or brittle, this will really help, and your cuticle will look absolutely flawless.

grapefruit.jpgAnother product that I love is OPI’s AvoJuice lotions.  They have avocado oil, so they are very moisturizing, and the scents are juice-inspired for the most part, very fruity and summery.  I’m working on a giant bottle of “Cran-Berry Juicie”.  These lotions are more ‘watery’ than most, so you really have to work to get them to absorb.

oneminutemanicure.jpgAnother step you can take in your manicures is to use a sugar scrub with a lot of oils in it, to remove excess cuticle and leave the hands really super soft.   One Minute Manicure is the original product like this, but there are since many more (from Creative, Skindecent,  etc) that will work as well.  I LOVE the Sunrise Citrus scent - it’s full of grapefruit and other citrus oils.

A general manicure for me involves this:

Use a hand scrub like the above One Minute Manicure

Remove old polish with 100% acetone

File into a squoval shape preferably with a glass file

Blue Cross, Sally Hansen Cuticle Remover (blue bottle) every two weeks or so and, then remove any left over cuticle with Tweezerman Squeeze & Snip

Wipe nails with alcohol to remove any oil. (optional)

Apply Nailtek II Intensive Therapy or Barielle Nail Rebuilding Protein. Try Nailtek X-Tra instead if your nails are esp hard to treat, or if your nails are recovering from acrylic damage. I use Orly Bonder as a base coat for my pedicures

2 coats of color

Revlon Colorstay Top Coat or Seche Vite Topcoat

Creative Solar Speed Spray

Use Creative Solar Oil a few times daily and, take GNC Hair, Skin, and Nails Vitamins.  Biotin at 2000 mcg or more per day is also shown to aid in growing fingernails.

Use latex gloves every time you do dishes, clean, etc.

At night, wear cotton gloves after applying a hand lotion (Avojuice is what I use, but any lotion is better than nothing).  Cocoa or Shea butter also works great but it’s super greasy so the cotton gloves are a must, and it may feel funny at first.
